Spinal Program in the Czech Rep.

In the fifties and sixties of the last century, Professor Beneš strived to create specialised centres for the treatment and rehabilitation of SCI patients. His ideas could only be realised much later.

In the 1990s, the first spinal unit was founded in Brno. In 2002, after complicated discussions among the Spine Surgery Society, Ministry of Health, and non-profit organizations, a methodological guideline was issued which set up a network of departments responsible for complex care of these patients in different stages after injury. There are spine surgery departments, spinal cord units, and spinal rehabilitation units in rehabilitation centres.

Every year, about 250 patients with acute spinal cord lesions are hospitalized and treated in these departments.
